Riomaggiore, like the other Cinque Terre, is squeezed between the Ligurian Sea and the steep mountain range that separates from the Apennines near Mount Zatta and descends in a south-east direction, acting as a watershed between the Vara Valley and the coastal area. The historic center, whose original nucleus dates back to the 13th century, is located in the valley of the Rio Maggiore stream, the ancient Rivus Major from which the village takes its name. The town is made up of several parallel orders of Genoese tower houses that follow the steep course of the stream. The new district of the Station developed in the second half of the 19th century after the construction of the Genoa-Pisa railway and is located in the adjacent valley of the Rio Finale stream (Rufinàu), so called because it once marked the border between the lands of Riomaggiore and those of Manarola (Manaèa).
Corniglia, a village on the Ligurian Riviera di Levante and a hamlet of the municipality of Vernazza, in the province of La Spezia, is one of the towns of the Cinque Terre.Traces of medieval buildings can be seen in Via Fieschi, where some houses stand on part of a medieval building, and near the "Largo Taragio" square from which, going up, you can access the "Torre", an ancient defensive garrison built in the 16th century with permission from the Fieschi family, to defend against Turkish incursions.
The entire town develops along the direction of Via Fieschi, the main road that leads from the parish church of San Pietro to the belvedere of the terrace of Santa Maria.
Like the other Cinque Terre, Manarola is squeezed between the Ligurian Sea and the steep mountain range that separates from the Ligurian Apennines near Mount Zatta and descends in a south-east direction, acting as a watershed between the Val di Vara and the coastal area. The village is located in the final stretch of the Groppo torrent valley. The colorful houses, made up of typical Genoese tower houses, overlook one another on the main street, called Via Discovolo, created by covering the watercourse. The village then climbs up the rocky ridge that juts out into the sea, creating a network of narrow alleys, which run parallel on several intermediate levels connected by irregular slate stairways.
Coming from the west, Vernazza is the second of the towns that make up the Cinque Terre, in a bay between the towns of Monterosso al Mare and Riomaggiore. It also includes the next village of Corniglia, a hamlet of it.The town, which grew along the Vernazzola stream (now covered) which constitutes its central artery, has an exceptionally intact urban fabric, divided into a series of alleys and steep stairways. Above the town of Vernazza, at an altitude of 325 meters above sea level, is the sanctuary of Nostra Signora di Reggio.
